15mm Dichroscope Aluminium

This dichroscope offers a 15mm clear optical path diameter housed in a rigid, anodised aluminium barrel. Its construction ensures dimensional stability across typical UK indoor temperatures (10–25°C) and humidity levels. Total length is approximately 12 cm; outer diameter ~2.5 cm; net weight ~85 g. Internal optics consist of aligned polarising elements and a calcite split-image prism, permanently secured to prevent misalignment. It enables direct visual detection of dichroism by presenting two co-located, polarisation-separated views of a gemstone’s transmitted light. In trichroic materials, sequential rotation about three orthogonal axes allows mapping of all three principal absorption colours—supporting full crystallographic characterisation. The tool does not require external power, calibration, or accessories beyond proper lighting and a stable surface or handhold. Intended for professional-grade visual analysis: supports GIA/IGI-aligned identification workflows, serves as a primary screening tool before advanced spectroscopy, and aids in detecting heat treatment effects that alter pleochroic expression in gems like amethyst or citrine.
