Clematis montana Mayleen Plant in 9cm Pot
Clematis are a well know and very widely planted species of vigorous climber that are widely distributed around the world. There are many forms and hybrids in cultivation, almost all grown for their amazing flowers. In general Clematis like to be planted in full sun but with shaded roots. A fertile moist well drained soil will give best results but in truth they are seldom very fussy
Mayleen is similar to the Montana types which flower on the previous year's wood so are seldom pruned back to the base as the more woody framework the more flowers
Mayleen is an excellent Clematis with single flowers of rose pink which are very fragrant and literally smother the plant from May to mid June. If you need to reduce the size of plant then prune immediately after flowering. Can be used in a mixed planting or as a stand alone specimen in the garden or can easily be grown in a pot or container. Requires a frame work of some description to twine around. If it becomes to large it can easily be cut back after the spring flowers. When growing in a pot or other container. Use a good quality John Innes compost as this plant will be there a long time and peaty types of compost eventually degrade and become too packed and choke the roots. Ensure you feed regularly as a hungry plant is a poor performer. We recommend Osmoscote pro 5-6 month applied in late spring. One application gives all the nutrients the plant requires for the whole year. John Innes is a soils based compost.
