Cordyline australis Torbay Dazzler (9cm)
A superb plant and especially if you are looking to create that tropical/Mediterranean effect. This man made palm like tree is compact and very striking but is not completely hardy. In southern areas it will survive in sunny sheltered locations however it must be given additional protection in cold weather below -2 to -3C
Wrap in hessian or similar material. In northern areas it should only be grown in containers that can be bought inside during winter. The bigger trees with more than 1 mtr of trunk are hardier than younger plants. More mature plants occasionally produce masses of small fragrant creamy flowers in late summer. People like the fragrance but to a very small minority it is not so pleasant. You won't harm the tree by cutting off the flower stems. A large tree in a good year can produce over 1million seeds
This plant can be used in a mixed planting or as a stand alone specimen in the garden or can easily be grown in a pot or other container in a greenhouse or large conservatory. If in a pot it cannot stay outside over winter except in the mildest of locations. Use a good quality John Innes compost as this plant will be there a long time and peaty types of compost eventually degrade become too packed and choke the roots. Ensure you feed regularly as a hungry plant is a poor performer. We recommend Osmoscote pro 8-9 month applied in the early spring. One application gives all the nutrients the plant requires for the whole year. John Innes is a soils based compost.
