Description

Hoya incurvula Ø7cm

Hoya incurvula - Compact plant with fragrant pink flowers Hoya incurvula is a rare and fascinating species from the Hoya genus, native to the Solomon Islands in the Pacific Ocean. This epiphytic plant stands out through its compact dimensions and delicate pale pink star-shaped flowers that emit a subtle, sweet fragrance. The small, oval, intensely green leaves with a slightly succulent texture form a dense foliage that looks exceptionally decorative. What makes Hoya incurvula such a special plant is the combination of compact habit, ability to bloom abundantly, and ease of care. Unlike many other Hoya species that can reach considerable dimensions, this species remains relatively small and manageable, making it perfect for limited spaces or collections where every centimeter counts. The flowers are truly miniature jewels. Each individual flower has five waxy petals in a delicate pale pink, with a darker central corona that creates a refined contrast. Inflorescences comprise 10-20 small flowers grouped in spherical umbels that persist for weeks, filling the room with a sweet fragrance, especially during evening hours. The thin, flexible stems of Hoya incurvula grow both as trailing and climbing, adapting easily to any type of support or allowing free cascading from a hanging pot. The moderate growth rate means the plant does not require frequent pruning and maintains a compact, elegant appearance throughout the entire year. Optimal growing conditions and care Light ideal for Hoya incurvula is bright indirect . A spot near an east or west-facing window where the plant receives a few hours of filtered sun is perfect. Avoid intense direct sunlight, which can cause leaf discoloration or burns. Conversely, too dim lighting will delay flowering and produce elongated stems with large internodes, losing the characteristic compact appearance. Watering works best with a simple balance. Allow the substrate to partially dry between waterings - the first 2-3 centimeters should be dry before adding water. In summer, watering is usually done once a week, while winter frequency decreases significantly. The slightly succulent leaves store water, giving the plant good tolerance to short drought periods, so it simply prefers a substrate that drains freely rather than staying soggy. Use room-temperature water for optimal results. Temperature recommended is between 18°C and 28°C. The plant is happiest kept above 12°C, away from cold drafts and the direct reach of artificial heat sources. A slight nighttime cooling can stimulate flower bud formation. Ideal air humidity is 50-70%, though the plant adapts well to standard home conditions. Substrate should be well-draining and aerated. An equal-parts mix of pine bark, perlite, and sphagnum is ideal. The pot should not be too large - a compact pot stimulates flowering and prevents excessive moisture accumulation at root level. Propagation and multiplication Hoya incurvula propagates efficiently through stem cuttings . Select a stem portion with 2-3 nodes and a few healthy leaves, then place it in a moist mix of perlite and sphagnum or in clean water. Roots typically appear within 3-5 weeks at a constant temperature of at least 20°C, with high humidity ensured by covering with transparent film or placing in a miniature greenhouse. Air layering is another method with high success rates. Wrap a node with moist sphagnum moss and film, maintaining humidity until roots develop sufficiently for separation. This technique is preferred for valuable specimens, as the cutting remains connected to the mother plant throughout rooting, keeping success rates high. Fertilization is done during the active growth season (April-September) with a balanced liquid fertilizer at half the recommended concentration, every two weeks. To stimulate flowering, a phosphorus-rich fertilizer can be used alternatively once a month. In winter, fertilization is suspended entirely. Flower peduncles should never be cut after flowering, as they will produce new flowers in subsequent seasons. Repotting is done every 2-3 years in spring, using a pot only 1-2 centimeters larger in diameter. Slightly cramped roots stimulate flowering, so do not rush to move the plant into a much larger pot. Ensure the new substrate is fresh and well-draining. Origin and botanical characteristics Hoya incurvula belongs to the family Apocynaceae , subfamily Asclepiadoideae , and is native to the Solomon Islands, a tropical archipelago in the South Pacific Ocean. In its natural environment, this species grows as an epiphyte on tree trunks and branches in humid tropical forests, at low to medium altitudes, where it benefits from high humidity and filtered light. The name 'incurvula' comes from Latin and refers to the slightly incurved leaf margins, a distinctive morphological characteristic visible especially in mature specimens. The leaves are small (3-5 centimeters), oval, thick, and succulent, with a smooth, glossy deep green surface. Thi
