Manuka-honey - 500 g
Manuka honey has established something of a cult following in recent years, after acclaim from high profile celebrities. Manuka honey is so-called because the bees that produce it feed extensively on the Manuka Bush. Found only in New Zealand, pollen collected from the Manuka Bush is particularly high in a compound known as dihydroxyacetone.
Manuka honey is special because of the high levels of methylglyoxal it contains. Often shortened simply to the initials “MGO”, this naturally-occurring compound is derived from the dihydroxyacetone of the Manuka Bush.
Manuka honey is classified by the level of MGO each batch contains. “Multifloral” varieties, where bees have collected pollen from a range of different plants including the Manuka Bush, tend to have a lower overall MGO rating. In cases where bees collect primarily or exclusively from Manuka Bushes – known as “monofloral” honey - these levels are understandably higher.
Thanks to effort by the New Zealand government to ensure only approved products carry the name “Manuka” all our honeys have been independently verified in their country of origin to ensure the highest levels of quality and purity every time.
