Automatic adjusters can back out when the throttle is closed suddenly at high RPM, which may cause the cams to go momentarily out of time, potentially leading to bent valves or serious engine damage. Hydraulic tensioners may apply excessive tension on the chain guide under high RPM and high oil pressure conditions, resulting in premature wear. These issues can be eliminated by installing a manual tensioner. Regardless of engine operation, cam chain tension remains constant.
