Ophiopogon planiscapus Nigrescens - Black Grass Black Dragon
This is a very striking plant. Introduced originally from Japan it is the same family as Asparagus (Don't eat it
). For the very best jet black leaves it needs to be in full sun and very well drained but moist soil. Will still grow well in lesser locations (no lime) but will be more of a purple black. It forms clumps so will spread over a wide area given time. Lift and divide if it becomes too much. Plant front of border and ensure it is not surrounded by faster, larger growing plants that will swamp it. A very popular plant much loved by designers
Can easily be grown in a pot or container. When growing in a pot or other container. Use a good quality ericaceous John Innes compost as this plant will be there a long time and peaty types of compost eventually degrade and become too packed and choke the roots. Ensure you feed regularly as a hungry plant is a poor performer. We recommend Osmoscote pro 5-6 month applied in the early spring. One application gives all the nutrients the plant requires for the whole year. John Innes is a soils based compost.
