Pyracantha Saphyr Cadaune - Firethorn
A very well known and popular evergreen vigorous large shrub. One of the finest plants for a north or north east facing wall as well as those in full sun
Very hardy and tolerant of all conditions including seaside and industrial areas. Deep glossy green foliage with creamy white flowers in abundance in early summer followed by masses of golden yellow berries in autumn and winter. This plant is often used as a hedging plant. Once established it is particularly effective as a security hedge as it has large unfriendly thorns. Regrettably they do not distinguish between intruders and residents so be careful
This Pyracantha was bred for it's exceptional performance and resistance to scab and fireblight. Pyracantha can be used in a mixed planting as an excellent quality hedge as a stand alone specimen in the garden or can easily be grown in a pot. It is however at its best against a wall where it will grow bigger than any other location. When growing in a pot or other container. Use a good quality John Innes compost as this plant will be there a long time and peaty types of compost eventually degrade and become too packed and choke the roots. Ensure you feed regularly as a hungry plant is a poor performer. We recommend Osmoscote pro 12-14 month applied in the early spring. One application gives all the nutrients the plant requires for the whole year. John Innes is a soils based compost.
